Is Cambodia better to cycle than Australia?

Now don’t get me wrong, I love Australia more than Eddie McGuire loves Collingwood, but I’ve cycled across both Cambodia and Australia a few times and there’s just something about Cambodia that keeps me going back for more. If you haven’t pushed pedals in Cambodia before, here’s a few reasons why you should…

There is no road rage in Cambodia

Yep, believe it or not, cars and bikes are friends in Cambodia. In fact, there’s a lot more bikes than cars (if you include motors), especially in the cities. This means that the awareness level is huge, from all road users. Traffic jams can be daily, yet people are as calm as bath tub water. Even the horn has a different meaning. People are just saying… ‘stay where you are, I’ll go around, have a great day!’

Cambodia is safer than you think

Now, like all countries, common sense plays a part in staying upright on your wheels. We’ve completed a few tours now over in Cambodia and taken quite a lot of Australians. We’re yet to meet anyone who doesn’t think that it’s safer in Cambodia than it is at home in Australia. It could be due to the speed? Even on national highways in Cambodia, the average speed is about 60km/h. It’s more due to the quality of the cars than a moral or legal commitment to safety, but nonetheless. Our tours are very much off the beaten track, through local villages where most cars cannot even go. So there may be a little bias there!

 Cycling is a great way to travel (and it’s easy!)

How do you get around a country on your holidays if you don’t have a bike? By bus? Train? Car? There is just so much that you’d miss! Travelling by bike means that you will find yourself in small, local villages meeting real local people, away from the tourist traps of any destination. It’s about those impromptu experiences and magical photographs away from the crowds. At Social Cycles, we very much believe that it’s about the journey more than the destination.
